Basic information of Ethyl acetate
The IUPAC name of Ethyl acetate is ethyl acetate. With the CAS registry number 141-78-6, it is also named as Acetic acid, ethyl ester. The product's categories are Intermediates; Organics; Alcohol; Analytical Chemistry; Solvents for HPLC & Spectrophotometry; Solvents for Spectrophotometry; Aluminum Bottles; Reagent Plus(R)Semi-Bulk Solvents; Ethyl Acetate Solvent Bottles; Spectrophotometric Grade Solvents; Spectrophotometric Grade Solvents; Protein Sequencing; Protein Structural Analysis; Reagents for Protein Sequencing; Chemical Class; EQ - EZ Analytical Standards; Esters Analytical Standards; Ethyl AcetateSolvents; etc. Besides, it is clear colorless liquid with a fruity odor, which should be stored in sealed, ventilated and cool warehouse at 2-8 °C. And it is stable, but incompatible with various plastics, strong oxidizing agents. In addition, its molecular formula is C4H8O2 and molecular weight is 88.10.
Preparation of Ethyl acetate: this chemical can be prepared by the classic Fischer esterification reaction of Ethanol and Acetic acid.
CH3CH2OH + CH3COOH → CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O
This reaction will occur at room temperature. The yield is 65 %.
Uses of Ethyl acetate: this chemical is primarily used as a solvent and diluent. It can be used to clean circuit boards and in some nail varnish removers. It is also used in paints as an activator or hardener. Furthermore, it is used in column chromatography and extractions in the laboratory. And it is used in wines. What's more, it can be used in insect collecting and study as an effective asphyxiant in the field of entomology. Similarly, it can be hydrolyzed in acidic or basic conditions to regain acetic acid and ethanol.
